NBA All-Star 2009: East vs West

The annual NBA All-Star game in Phoenix is coming up in a little over a week. Both teams’ rosters have been announced and this year’s all-star game will surely be an exciting one. As usual, the West team is bigger and tougher inside while the East team will dominate with their speed and quickness.

The East have Lebron and Dwyane in their team. They are two of the league’s top scorers. I don’t think there is anyone in the Western All-Stars team who will be capable of stopping the offensive onslaught of these two players. Then Dwight will be Dwight. He will take over the painted area, rejecting or altering shots that come his way. The East team also has its fair share of shooters, Joe Johnson, Rashard Lewis, and others who are also capable of hitting the long bombs.

On the other hand, the West team will have Kobe leading their offensive attack. Chris Paul, arguably the league’s best point guard, will also be there to control the tempo of the game.  Then, the West’s bigs; bigs will always be bigs. They will naturally operate in the paint and maybe in the perimeter, 15-18 feet from the hoop. Tim Duncan, Amar’e, Yao, Shaq, and Pau will have to show that they can keep up with the pace of the smaller players of the East team if they want to win.

In my opinion, the Eastern All-Stars will win this year and Lebron will take home MVP honors once again. The Eastern All Stars are much younger and more athletic than the West team. Height advantage doesn’t matter much nowadays in the NBA. High-flyers just jump over them and dunk in their opponents’ faces.
