Is Hedo Turkoglu Worth the Tax?
Now that the 2009 NBA Finals are over, the Lakers are celebrating while the Magic are rebuilding. And one player that has opted out of his contract is Hedo Turkoglu. Turkoglu has come a long way since he first made an impact with the Sacramento Kings. Showing that he can be a go-to-guy, Hedo was one of the bright spots for the Orlando Magic during their recent appearance in the NBA finals.
While he made a good account for himself, it is apparent that he deserves to stay. But if a player opts to check out the free market (for money purposes obviously) should you openly say that you are willing to pay the price for that player?
Such is the case for the Orlando Magic which had said it would be willing to pay for the luxury tax. But seriously, is he that valuable? Some coaches say he creates match-up problems which is probably true. But he is also slow and is inconsistent as well. He isn’t in the mold of a dominating player like Pau Gasol or even Trevor Ariza. So why bother to waste your time.
With all due respect to Turkoglu and the Magic, it is too early to talk about next season. Turkoglu is good but he is not that good. With the NBA draft coming up and a pretty open free agent market, maybe the Orlando Magic should check out these options first. It is better than paying for something that can be overruled by potentially better options. Wouldn’t you agree?
