Shakey’s Volley

MANILA, Philippines — National University and Angelicum College hope to keep their winning ways against a pair of fancied teams as action in the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League NCR leg resumes today at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

The NUI tossers swept their first three matches in Pool A but brace for a tough outing against the De La Salle-Zobel (DLZ) side at 1 p.m. while ANC goes for its third win in row in Pool B against University of the East (UOE) in the 9 a.m. opener of a six-game bill.

DLZ and UOE hurdled their respective opening day assignments and are going all out to stop NUI and ANC’s win run in the two-division tournament sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and organized by Metro Sports.

SLOW-PITCH: La Salle vs Ateneo

La Salle opens its title-retention bid against Ateneo in the 8th Cebuana Lhuillier Alumni Slo-pitch Softball League tomorrow at the International School of Manila Field in Taguig. The Green Archers, led by veterans Mike Ochosa, Bernie Gapuz, brothers Anthony and Leslie Suntay and national team member Joseph Orillana, bagged last year’s ASSL title by beating UP Los Banos in the finals.

This year, the La Salle alumni team hopes to kick start its back-to-back bid with a win against the Blue Eagles who will be bannered by Nikko Dizer, Em Fernandez, Benjo Afuang, Ricky Gumaru, pitcher Jun Muyco and power hitting Mike Gayoso.

Other teams that will challenge La Salle for the crown are UP Diliman, UP Los Banos and International School of Manila. UP Diliman will be led by SEA Games winning pitcher Darwin dela Calzada.

Khan Rematch

LONDON (AP) — Amir Khan has gained a rematch with Lamont Peterson in Las Vegas in May, and a chance to regain the WBA light welterweight title he lost in controversial circumstances. Khan announced the May 19 fight on Twitter on Thursday, backed by his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions.

Peterson beat Khan on points to lift the WBA and IBF titles in Washington on Dec. 10, but Khan complained about being deducted two points,
