NBA-Former Olympian Boozer dies at 75

Bob Boozer, a former NBA player and member of the United States team that won the gold medal at the 1960 Olympic Games, has died at the age of 75, the Omaha World-Herald reported on Sunday.

A versatile forward who was a two-time All-American at Kansas State University, Boozer died on Saturday night in his native Omaha, Nebraska.

According to the Thomas Funeral Home in Omaha, the cause of his death was not confirmed.

Coyotes live to fight another day

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – The Phoenix Coyotes weren’t about to go quietly into the night as long as captain Shane Doan had a say in the matter.

Doan handled all the scoring and Mike Smith posted this third shutout of the post-season as the Coyotes staved off elimination from the Stanley Cup playoffs by beating Los Angeles 2-0 on Sunday.

Captain Doan scored his fourth and fifth goals of the playoffs and Smith stopped all 36 shots he faced for the Coyotes, who now trail the Kings 3-1 in the best-of-seven Western Conference series.

IndyCar fines 13 teams for rules violations

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – IndyCar has levied $275,000 in fines to 13 different teams, including Indianapolis 500 pole-sitter Ryan Briscoe.

The fines covered 18 different infractions discovered in Saturday’s pre-qualifying inspection. IndyCar announced the penalties Sunday night.

Sharapova beats Li to retain Italian Open title

ROME (AP) – Maria Sharapova retained the Italian Open title on Sunday with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory over Li Na in a match dominated by wild swings of momentum and interrupted twice by rain.

Li appeared to be on course for victory as she stormed into a 6-4, 4-0 lead but 24 unforced errors from the French Open champion allowed Sharapova to take the next six games and the set.
